What Is Loaves and Fishes?
Loaves and Fishes is our annual church-wide, social justice project that involves up to 100 members. On one weekend, we prepare 600 bag lunches and prepare and serve up to 600 hot meals. This year the dates are March 26 and 27.

This page describes the typical Loaves and Fishes activities. Due to the Covid 19 virus, these activities will not take place. We’ll let you know how you can help in 2021 as soon as a plan has been established.

Where?
The lunch preparation takes place at UUCWC on Friday night. We serve the hot meal at St Mary’s Cathedral in Trenton on Saturday morning.

The Background
The Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) and other organizations serve meals to the hungry in Trenton during the week. There is no meal service on Saturday or Sunday. A group of churches and other organizations fill that void by serving meals on the weekend. One such food provider is Loaves and Fishes at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

One Saturday a year, UUCWC and the Princeton UU Congregation work together to provide one of the Saturday meals along with a brown bag lunch for the following day. The need is great. Over 600 meals are served on a typical Saturday.

What’s in it for me?
If you help out on Saturday, you’ll have the opportunity to serve food directly to people who are homeless, disabled the working poor and the mentally ill in Trenton. While making lunches on Friday night, you’ll get to socialize members from Princeton and UUCWC. Remember that the sandwich that you make or the meal that you serve make may be the only meal of the day for those who receive it.

2021 Dates: March 26 and 27.
