Take a Look at Your Wall

I don’t know about you, but whenever I find a quote, bumper sticker, Facebook posting or anything that inspires me, I post it on a bulletin board above my desk at home (and in the church office). These items illuminate all the various aspects of my world, my heart and my soul. My wall has clippings and pictures that have spoken to me throughout my life – so I thought I’d share them with you for a glimpse into who I am, not only as a musician, but the breadth of my world! What’s on your wall??

  • A Norman Rockwell painting of people of all ages, races and religions that says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I first saw this in Charles Stephens’ office and found it to put on my “wall”.
  • I came across a Native American artist when we visited the Southwest a few years ago and I have a painting of hers that shares a Native American Proverb, “The Great Spirit Gave Us Each a Song”. This hangs in my office at church too.
  • A button from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s “Rally to Restore Sanity 10/30/10”.
  • A card from my old pal, Desmond, “Good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them, but you know they’re always there…”
  • Bumper Stickers: COEXIST, “The Christian Right is Neither” and from the Human Rights Campaign.
  • A photo of me in singing in a choir from my touring and singing days in NY.
  • Drawings of John F. Kennedy and a laughing Jesus.
  • My favorite picture of Robert Joe and me on a sightseeing boat in New England many years ago.
  • A magnet “Music is the voice of the soul.”
  • Photos of our daughter, Hannah, at various ages.
  • Something printed from Facebook: “To raise a child, who is comfortable enough to leave you, means you’ve done your job.
  • They are not ours to keep, but to teach how to soar on their own.”
  • Small affirming notes from the wonderful women in our spirituality group, “Graces”.
  • My favorite quote I try to live by: “Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they do not want it. What seems like conceit, bad manners or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen.
