Lunch and Learn Film Discussion – August 15
Jul 31st, 2010 • Category: Committee News, News & EventsStanding on the Side of Love at UUCWC invites you to gather to view the documentary 9500Liberty, which tells the stoy of what happened in Prince William County when they passed an “Immigration Resolution” similar to Arizona’s SB 1070. This film will be screened across the nation this summer to bring people together to discuss this important issue.
As many of you have already signed petitions and postcards imploring our representatives in Congress to enact comprehensive reform, this film will both affirm our convictions that humane immigration reform is sorely needed and possibly introduce us to new perspectives on this divisive issue. Wherever you personally stand on the immigration question, this event will be a worthwhile opportunity to meet, watch and discuss.
Please consider attending. Your participation will make this event a success. The screening will take place after the church service on Sunday, August 15th. Bring a bag lunch. Beverages will be provided. Register in advance with Loren McAlister or Kathy Frey or sign up on the ARE bulletin board outside the church office.
The issue of immigration also figured prominently at the recent UUA General Assembly in Minneapolis at the end of June. Delegates approved a 2010 “Action of Immediate Witness” on Immigration to Oppose Anti-Immigrant Measures at the State Level (Arizona SB1070 and the Like) and Hasten Federal Immigration Reform, the entire text of which is found at www.uua.org/socialjustice/socialjustice/statements/169112.shtml.
