Peacemaking Discussion – Monday, January 25
Jan 21st, 2010 • Category: Committee News, Council for Faith in Action, Denominational Affairs, Journey Toward Wholeness, News & EventsThe Fifth Principle of Unitarian Universalism affirms and promotes the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process. In keeping with this, the way in which our denomination arrives at consensus on various social issues is by a democratically agreed upon process called the Social Witness Process, names as such because we bear witness to social inequity. (UUA website)
The Commission on Social Witness has released its latest draft statement on Peacemaking. For a Draft Statement of Conscience to appear on the 2010 General Assembly Final Agenda, Unitarian Universalist Association bylaws require a minimum of 25% of certified congregations to participate in the vote on whether the Draft SOC should be placed on the Final Agenda. There is also the opportunity for congregations to again submit comments, as we did last January.
Please join us to discuss the draft statement on Peacemaking on Monday, January 25, 7:30pm, at a forum sponsored by Denominational Affairs, Journey Toward Wholeness, and the Council for Faith in Action. See http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/issuesprocess/ for more info on theis process and the text of the draft peacemaking statement, or contact Jim Bicksler or Lynne Quinto.
