Effort for Marriage Equality Continues – Vote Scheduled for Jan. 7

Jan 6th, 2010 • Category: Minister's Blog

The New Jersey State Senate recently announced that it will hold a vote on pending Marriage Equality legislation on Thursday, January 7, 2010. Marriage equality advocates will be gathering at the State House in Trenton that morning to continue to urge their legislators to stand on the side of love and support marriage equality for same-sex couples.

I have been an outspoken advocate for marriage equality for same-sex couples, and have been working with other advocates throughout the effort to gain marriage equality in New Jersey. Prior to this, I performed symbolic same-sex wedding ceremonies in New Paltz, NY, and at Bucks County Community College, in Newtown, PA. And I’m proud to lead a congregation that in 2003 unanimously voted to affirm the right of same-gender couples to be married. In fact, UUCWC was one of the first congregations in the U.S. to be designated by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a “Welcoming Congregation” that recognized the sexual diversity of its congregation and encouraged all members to participate fully in church activities and governance.

I’ll continue to contact my state representatives to express my views on the rights of same-sex couples to enter into a civil marriage, and I urge you to consider doing so as well.

If the New Jersey Senate passes the marriage equality bill on Thursday, it will be taken up by the Assembly on Monday, January 11.
