Council for Faith in Action – May Update
May 17th, 2009 • Category: Committee News, Council for Faith in Action“…..Compelled by justice, we give voice to societal concerns and reach out to touch the lives of others. ” – UUCWC Mission Statement
UUCWC designates 40% of the weekly plate (other than pledges) to social justice efforts. Most recently, your support enabled the Council for Faith in Action to:
- Help offset the costs of the forum, “The Role of Faith in Middle East Peace” with a donation of $100. The event was sponsored by Interfaith Community for Middle East Peace, formerly the Delaware Valley Interfaith Delegation to Israel/Palestine, the peacemaking mission in which Rev. Charles Stephens participated last year. Featured speakers were Rabbi Menachem Froman, from Tekoa, Israel, and Sheikh Ghassan Manasra, from Nazareth, Israel.
- Direct a donation of $500 to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen to help fill an immediate need when the word went out that there were insufficient resources on hand to provide the full meals that are typically serviced. Along with this emergency donation, the Social Justice Committee has been conducting an ongoing food drive, encouraging people to not come empty-handed to church. (Last collection date is May 31, resuming in September.)
- Provide $250 to Journey Toward Wholeness to purchase new books and videos for the JTW library. The library provides resources to not only our church, but to the 51 churches in the New York Metro District, for personal and church use in anti-oppression education. The library is staffed by JTW members and is open for our congregation’s perusal twice per month, and is an effective vehicle for education on issues of oppression.
- Fund the Social Justice Committee’s purchase of another set of basic items to furnish a room at HomeFront’s Family Preservation Center in Ewing, which provides a secure place for families in transition. When a family moves out of the center, they take the purchased items with them to get started in their own home. The room is identified as being supported by UUCWC; several sets of furnishings are provided each year.
UUA – Social Justice Issues
The Unitarian Universalist Association works on a number of social justice issues at any given time. These issues are determined by the statements passed by UUs through the social witness process. The issues are divided into six areas: BGLT Equality, Civil Rights and Religious Liberty, Economic and Racial Justice, Environmental Justice, Health and Family Justice, and International Peace and Human Rights. For more information on all of these, see http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/issues/index.shtml.
Anyone interested in submitting a proposal for a social justice project or directed giving is strongly encouraged to do so. Forms and information are available in the UUCWC office and on the UUCWC website. If you have questions, or are interested in being part of the Council for Faith in Action, please contact Lynne Quinto.
